Of Book Clubs & Bonding
"What is YOUR turtle?" was the seemingly unexpected starting prompt I asked of the Marguerite's Place, Inc. moms when kicking off Book Club this past Tuesday evening...as their ever willing volunteer guide and facilitator 😉🐢
If you've read The Coworker by Freida McFadden you know that Dawn, one of the main characters, was quirkily passionate about turtle everything. Turtle collectibles, cupcakes, and more.
The ladies were delighted to break the ice sharing their own versions of quirky passions, including their loves of Smiskis (I had NO idea what these were and now I see them everywhere!), beta-fish, The Minions, and bird ornaments to name a few.
As we dove into other discussion prompts, we learned rather quickly how tricky it was to map out, summarize, or even just gather our thoughts around a McFadden plot and characters given all the twists, turns and distraction techniques involved!
We muddled, chuckled, and befuddled through, covering themes from office dynamics, stereotypes, and isolation to justice, compassion and forgiveness. Participants rated the book from a 4 out of 5...to a 10 out of 5...or what it 20?!
Lots of energy, enthusiasm and escape--and THAT was the whole point! :)
Special shout out to Team McFadden who responded so quickly and kindly when I reached out to ask if this local author in the Boston area might by chance be available to meet our local moms and book club in southern NH...of course she wasn't...but given the effort and warmness of their reply...I bet they'd make reaaally NICE coworkers 😂
Next up? Remarkably Bright Creatures and the ladies are already running with the sea life theme!! 🐙 Keep it up, my Marguerite's Marguereaders!
