can polyphenols boost resilience?
This morning, while walking through a dewy wooded trail passing brooks, bogs and bright reds and blues of highbush cranberries and blueberries, I was reminded how often nature gives us what we need most. Those vibrant berries aren’t just beautiful — they’re rich in polyphenols, plant compounds that science is now linking to emotional resilience.
(For clarity: “highbush cranberries” aren’t true cranberries, but a tart berry traditionally used in jellies — and definitely not as readily pickable/snackable as the sweet blueberries growing nearby!)
Recent studies suggest polyphenols can:
• Support brain plasticity (through proteins like BDNF that help with mood and adaptability)
• Buffer stress by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress
• Strengthen the gut–brain connection, which influences mood and balance
• Protect focus and memory during times of stress or fatigue
Resilience, of course, also comes from sleep, movement, mindset, and connection. But nourishing ourselves with colorful, polyphenol-rich foods may be another powerful tool for staying grounded when life gets challenging.
This walk left me inspired — and grateful for the way food and nature can support both body and spirit.
