The Masks We Wear

"This week, I'm wearing my 'I'm okay' mask, but I'm just masking my stress."

"I'm hiding anger and resentment about some of my relationships."

"I want to be calm for my kids but I'm trying not to show my worry and confusion."

These were some of the initial responses from the safe circle that is our monthly Family Support Night at Marguerite's Place, Inc. when the residents were asked what emotions or realities they felt they were masking with a brave face.

As their facilitator, I gently encouraged the group to be curious and explore what lies beneath as they navigate change and challenge. And to really reflect on what helps them come out from behind the mask.

Honesty, community, support, acknowledgement, encouragement. Each other. They were firm and rapid in their responses. They shared stories, experience, and wisdom around the table. They doubled down on their commitment to their Marguerite's community, especially helping the newer residents feel at home.

And then we flipped the script, as they decorated their own masquerade style masks, with paint, jewel stickers and feathers in reach. What happens when you focus on your strengths? And what you've learned? How do you look and feel when you face the world in that way?

Beautiful. Resilient. Confident. Strong. Empowered. They were thoughtful and deliberate in these responses. And they also, lifted and complimented one another as the room (and their faces) glowed along with the soft orange string lights.

Last evening, they left ta little lighter and feeling more connected and comfortable, helped and heard. They shed the masks, and wore their power. Sisterhood will do that.

Ask yourself, what mask have I been wearing and which of my strengths will I use to come out from behind it? Even better...reflect with a friend.
